Keeping carpets clean is one of the biggest challenges in home maintenance. Unlike hard floors, carpets trap dust, allergens, pet hair, and microscopic debris deep within their fibers. Over time, this buildup not only affects the appearance of your home but can also impact indoor air quality. That’s why choosing the right vacuum for carpets is essential.
- Prioritize vacuums with strong suction, motorized brush rolls, adjustable height, and effective filtration for deep carpet cleaning.
- Dyson Ball Animal 2 excels on thick, high-pile carpets and pet hair thanks to powerful suction and self-adjusting cleaner head.
- Shark Navigator NV352 offers the best value with Lift-Away versatility and HEPA filtration for routine carpet cleaning.
- Choose by need: uprights for power, canisters for delicate carpets and filtration, robots for maintenance between deep cleans.
In 2025, vacuum technology has evolved significantly. Modern carpet vacuums now feature stronger suction, smarter brush rolls, better filtration systems, and more user-friendly designs. However, with so many models available, finding the best option can feel overwhelming.
This guide breaks down the 6 best vacuums for carpets, focusing on deep cleaning performance, durability, ease of use, and real-world results. Whether you have thick plush carpets, low-pile rugs, pets, or allergy concerns, this article will help you make an informed decision.
Why Carpet-Specific Vacuums Matter
Carpets require a different cleaning approach than tile or hardwood floors. Dirt settles deep into carpet fibers, often beyond the reach of weak suction or basic brush systems. A vacuum designed for carpets should include:
-
Strong suction power to pull embedded debris
-
Motorized brush rolls to agitate fibers
-
Adjustable height settings for different pile depths
-
Effective filtration to trap allergens and fine dust
Using the wrong vacuum can leave dirt behind, wear down carpet fibers, or scatter allergens back into the air.

Amazing vacuum. Beats out my older Bissell 2999. I actually was in the market for a new vacuum as there were parts breaking on my Bissell 2999. (Dust buildup inside the motor housing leading to bearing whine, brush roller wear that required modification to prevent additional damage, as well as handle damage that prevented the vacuum handle from staying locked in place and later being unable to be removed as it got jammed slightly at an angle.)Moving on, this is actually a step up, despite having got it at a substantially lower price (99 dollars verse the original Bissell 2999 price being around 200 dollars.) I wanted something that people praised for higher reliability, and this advertised a limited 5 year warranty. I got it, because 99 for a well reviewed vacuum was excellent in idea. I then looked at reviews all over the internet only to find out more and more that the Shark NV360 was way better than expected. My only caveats to date are that it has a smaller agitator head, and that it doesn’t come with a agitator attachment, you’d need to get the Pro version NV356E to get the agitator attachment. It does come with a smaller crevasse tool and a very functional upholstery tool that also worked very very well on the stairs.Suction on this vacuum is amazing. Especially compared to my Bissell 2999. I have Hoover and Bissell Vacuums, and the 2999 was better than my previous vacuums, but oddly not better than this current one from Shark, the NV360 just to keep things clear. The hose diameter is larger, and that typically means less pressure for most vacuums, however, that is not the case here. You really need to be careful when using the attachments as it will suck up a sock you may have got too close too and it’ll all be too fast to recover from anywhere other than the dust bin.Emptying the dustbin is more involved than my Bissell and Hoover vacuums, where a single button press allows you to pull the bin from its’ resting place. In the case of the Shark, you will need to undo two latches that secure the bin in place, but while I thought this would be a bigger problem it has not been. Installing the bin has been a bigger issue than removing it but the process is still really simple. The dual latch does offer the better seal though as it allows for more uniform pressure on the seal under neath and keeps the dust flowing down. It does seem that the foam prefilter would need more cleans than my Bissell 2999 required, but I found that dust released from the Bissell system would agitate my nose a touch, because allergies, while I have had zero incidents of that with the shark. (The Bissell 2999 was still the best I had before I got this NV360 for allergies I experienced, I just thought it was because it was kicking something up but dust patterns formed later in its’ life showing it was some dust leakage.)Moving this around is easier than the Bissell 2999 as well, but that is partially because the base is smaller. Both were swivel style vacuums but the NV360 does better on tighter turns than the Bissell. The smaller head seems to also focus more of the dust into the dust bin. Going over areas the Bissell seamed done with, I found that there was still a ton of dirt and dust embedded into the carpet even after 8 passes with the Bissell. I only knew there was more because even though I wasn’t getting anything more on the 8th pass with the Bissell, going over the same area with the NV360 showed there was still a lot of dust left in the carpet. The Bissell did get all the dog hair though and there was only dust and dirt that the shark was able to extract. (This also lead me to do a carpet clean though, as I have a Bissel carpet cleaner that I really like and I finished the job with that.)My lesson learned though is that even with a great vacuum like the Shark or my previous best Bissell, you may have to vacuum more often than every 3-4 days as that dirt just keeps getting deeper if you dont.Moving on, I am actually very impressed and absolutely can recommend this vacuum to anyone who needs something better. I absolutely can recommend it to anyone who has allergies like me as well. Best vacuum to date. Side note though, when researching vacuums, I did find that the Shark Stratos and Rotator options are more amazing when it comes to airflow and pressure as well as large objects and long hair, but they are between 200 and 300 dollars. For me this is the best option for now, especially seeing it was only 99 dollars when I got it.
Great Vacuum Amazing price. I believe this is the best vacuum I’ve ever owned. We recently moved and purchased a home, our previous home was all hardwood floors and since I have back issues I had a great lightweight floor vac, our new home has wall to wall carpeting upstairs and I needed to purchase a better vacuum, I had an older model that stilled worked but was too heavy, the carpeting had been replaced a couple of months prior to our purchasing but we still had a nationally known company steam clean our carpeting, I had ordered the Bissell and about a week after steam “cleaning” I tested out my new bissell, it was so lightweight and adjustable my back had no issues at all, however the biggest shock was how much dirt and dust it vacuumed up, I was totally shocked and honestly grossed out. Its just my husband, an 18 y/o cat and myself, we spend so little time upstairs, I finally feel my carpets are clean and it has nothing to do with the 350.00 we spent on steam cleaning. I love it!
Good vacuum but not perfect. The good… This is a light weight vacuum with lots of suction power. I have a big set of stairs. I really like the light weight canister, that it can detach and be super light to carry while vacuuming tight corners and going up and down the stairs safely. It’s a regular vacuum and not a stick but detached, nearly as light weight as sticks. With attachments I can vacuum the ceiling and air vents. It is super light while in the upright vacuum mode, especially on carpets. It was the best price I could find online for this particular vacuum. The swivel head is another good reason to buy.The not so good… 4 Stars because Shark this shark has a short hose which makes the use while the canister is detached somewhat cumbersome and there are pretty much zero extensions (pole extensions) you can buy that fit. I believe shark uses off standard hose sizes. I am going to try a specially made attachment (I got on Amazon) so I can use some of the standard attachments I already have. We’ve had other Shark vacuums and none of those attachments fit this one which is a major bummer. Still, it’s still a good buy if you can get around the hose issues. Especially for the light weight and versatility of use while the canister is detached. There are great attachments out there you can buy, however strangely, not the pole ones I need.Still, this is a great vacuum for the price. Works well, Durability, good suction. Absolute buy.Update, the attachments I bought work great and make this vacuum highly functional.
At a loss for words. Warning, it’s a long read, but I wanted to go into deep detail. To start, I have been a Rainbow vacuum user for so long. I love them and felt they worked amazingly.Next, I have 3 dogs & a cat. One is a thick coat lab and the cat sheds so much as well.Another next, I have horrible allergies and wanted something that would help keep them calm as well. I also have a lung disease and need something that will pick up as much junk as possible to keep them clear. Now, on to the Shark vacuum.I got tired of lugging around the Rainbow and wanted to look into a vacuum that my daughter could use and help out.I found this Shark vacuum and 6 others that grabbed my attention.I dug deep. I read through every review, good, bad, indifferent.I wanted a vacuum that was going to truly pick up pet hair/dander, as well as pick up sand & dirt.I was drawn to this specific vacuum saying pet & allergen vacuum and loved that so many of the reviews said it had amazing suction power.I thought there’s no way ut can be as amazing as most were raving about. After 2 months of digging and narrowing down vacuums, I was left with this one. I finally decided to purchase it and see what all the fuss was about. It came in today and I immediately out it together to the it out.I had just vacuumed with my Rainbow vacuum 2 days before, so I didn’t expect much.Oh….my….gosh…! I am blown away! Seriously, no joke! The picture you see attached was after 2 passes over a 2′ x 2′ area in my living room. Not kidding…pushed it forward, pulled it back. Did this one other time. I was completely astonished! There is no way my carpet is that dirty after using my Rainbow 2 days before! I swore by that vacuum and how great of a job it did, so I thought. This vacuum pulled out dirt, sand, pet fur from 3 families ago, it seems lol.I immediately took this picture and dumped the resivoir since it was full.I was excited to finish the rest of my living room and then move on to the rest of the house. It took me 30 minutes to vacuum my living room because I had to keep stopping to empty the reservoir. I am grossed out that it was that dirty, but so grateful that I purchased this Shark vacuum. The vacuum is super easy to put together. It’s not heavy and is easy to use.I love that it has the large vacuum and the option to break it down to a hand held vacuum to get baseboards and hard to reach areas.I also love that the power switch has 3 positions; Off, Bare floor, and carpet.I love that there is a place on the vacuum for hose attachments.I love that the power cable is quite long.I love that it’s compact enough to fit in my coat closet, but large enough to vacuum the living room quicker than the sport vacuum. It makes vacuuming a breeze. The price is amazing for being a Shark vacuum. This vacuum is so amazing that I finished vacuuming, rinsed the resivoir and filter, put it away, and immediately sat down to write this review.Seriously give this vacuum a try!Your only regret is that you didn’t get it sooner.I will update this review if anything changes.I am convinced this is the perfect vacuum.
Eureka PowerSpeed Upright Vacuum. Purchased Vacuum as replacement for SHARK. EUREKA is lightweight and easy to maneuver. The suction is great and cleans well. Plenty of accessories, I especially like the pet hair tool. The cord could be a bit longer; I need to change plugs for my family room to get the entire room. The canister is large, but not so easy to empty. The plastic clip does not always align with the tab. The vacuum is powerful and works very well. The vacuum is worth the price. My only issue is that to empty the container and refit the filter and catch bin is a bit of a puzzle and it does not always fit together well.
Nice little vacuum. We got this as a gift to a student headed off to college. They said it works very well, is light, picks up the dirt, and is easy to use.
I like it😍😍😍. This vacuum cleaner is really good — the suction power is excellent. It picks up hair, pet fur, dust, and even crumbs very well. The only downside is that it’s a bit inconvenient to use under the bed or couch, and it’s slightly heavy. Overall, though, it works great!😍
It vacuums up all the dirt on the folder very well and is very easy to use. The Eureka Powerful Upright Vacuum Cleaner is an excellent choice for anyone looking for strong suction, versatility, and ease of use at an affordable price. It performs well on multiple floor types, including carpets, hardwood, and tile. The vacuum is lightweight enough to maneuver comfortably, yet sturdy enough to feel durable.
Works well. My previous vacuum was by a very popular brand, and it was expensive. It had every feature that you could imagine and worked as an upright, canister, and handheld unit. I had it for years and hated it. Why? Because it was very heavy, unwieldy, and bulky. None of the accessories were mounted on the unit, so I never used them. It was so “sophisticated” that it had its own computer board to operate the beater brush. That was what finally did it, and I was glad. This machine is much simpler and significantly less expensive. It is lighter by a mile. All of the accessories mount on it, which is a huge plus, and it is just as powerful as the former premium unit. The cord is slightly shorter than my old vacuum, and that vacuum would turn off the beater brush when the handle was upright. I really did like that feature, but it is also what broke and turned my last vacuum into trash, so I’ll live without it.I have to be honest, I’m tired of “advancement” that makes simple devices more complicated and more prone to failure. This is a basic vacuum. What does it do? It vacuums, and that is just what I need it to do.
